totally agree about sargeants flea mediction put it on my 2 cats one had seizures for about 10 hours i called sargeants all they said was send us the vet bills and we will reimburse you
then they put me through to their on call vet who told me the cat was too far gone to pull through. She herself said never to use this medication. Miracuously after several baths in dawn dishsoap the cat has survived but is still weak and dizzy falls over easily. My other cat also had a couple of seizures but was not as severe as the other one. This medication should be pulled from the market!! Had i researched it on the internet i never would have put it on my cats.

Three nights ago, my wife bathed our two dogs (one a Yorke mix) the other (Bishonapoo). She used Sargents Flea and Tick shampoo. Following this I applied Sagrents Gold (for small dogs 9lbs -20 lbs. Our smaller dog (about 8 lbs) didn't have an immediate reaction, but the Bisonapoo (12lbs) did. We usually get their flea medication from the vet, but I thought an over the counter type would be OK for a couple of weeks. We had never used Sargents before, so this was our first experience with their 30 day control tubes.

Within an hour, the Bishonapoo started to shake, pant very heavily and tried to claw himself. After realizing he was having such a reaction, we read the label and did as it instructed. We rebathed him in mild soap. This did help the panting some, but the dog could not be still as his nerves I guess were affected. This went on through the night and we bathed him a third time and this time used Aloe Vera on his spine to help ease the burn/irritation. By morning he would not eat, drink or even walk on his own.

Our other dog by this time had started to do the shakeing and was obviously having a milder reaction, but a reaction.

We called the vet and took them both in for evaluation. Our Dr., Dr. Murray said that they have had SEVERAL complaints about the same product -- and although they haven't lost a dog, several were very sick.

After paying for TWO office calls ($62) and a shot for the Bishonapoo ($20) and other non related issues, we left for home realizing that I had just spent about $100 and many unsettleing hours simply trying to keep a few fleas off our dogs! I have recently lost my primary job (at 62) and every dollar is carefully spent at this time, but we had to get them help and are glad that we did.

By the next morning, the Bishonapoo was still lathargek, would not move without being forced, would take no food or drink. I decided to give him 12 more hours before returning yet another time to the vet and thankfully, by late afternoon, he came out of it. They are both normal today other than scratching and a little shaking (like when wet), so there is still a little residule effect.

This was very frightening, dangerous and expensive. I would caution all dog owners to be extremely careful of this product.

I would appreciate any comment from Sargents.

Sincerely,
John E. Abbey

I have a Chihuahua and she had a reaction from the same medicine (sergeants flea & tick for 9lbs-20lbs. It started with constant movement all over the carpet as if she was trying to scratch her back and she was panting. I rinsed her off with water, it didn’t seem to help much(unfortunately I wasn’t aware of how well Dawn works for pets). Through the night it continued with the panting and constant movement and whining. She was constantly liking her paw…it was red so I think she may have scratched the back of her neck and got the medication on her paw. I took her a bath and washed her with regular dog shampoo and it seemed to help a little. This morning when we woke she was really hot under her belly, ears and head and still whining…she is now at the vet and we are waiting to hear back.

We purchased Sargeants as our regular brand was sold out. Our little chihuahua mix became ill trying to get at his back and shoulders. We washed Sargeants off but it did not seem to bring relief to our pooch. The next day we re-bathed our pet. He is still unhappy and whines now and then.
We will never purchase another Sargeants product again. We have to encourage our dog to eat by hand feeding him.
This product should not be on the market. Shame on Sargeants obviously they have not researched their product very well!

We just had a similar situation with our cat. My wife got up with our dog this morning around 3 a.m. thinking he needed to go out. He walked into the kitchen and was sniffing our cat which looked like he was sleeping. My wife noticed that he wasn't responding and when she picked him up, he was unresponsive and jerking with foam coming out of his mouth. Since it was 3 a.m., I rushed him to the local emergency vet where they diagnosed the problem as flea drops which were in fact Sargeants. They shaved his back and bathed him thoroughly and put him on I.V's. They kept him until around 7 a.m. when I picked him up and took him to our local vet to continue the treatments. Our vet says he's going to pull through.
So far it's cost me 400.00 dollars for the emergency vet visit with more charges coming once we pick him up from our vet.

Bottomline, this product is dangerous and should be pulled off the market.

I applied Sergeants gold to my pug yesterday(6/22/09). He seemed OK at first, after about 9 hours i noticed he was scratching himself. He is not an itchy dog. I really didn't think anything of it until the next day when I noticed he was biting his rear paw and scratching the spot where I put the Sergeants Gold on him. I have never used this product before, I had always used Advantix and have never had a problem. I must note that we have never had a problem with fleas or ticks with either of our dogs. Our other dog is a Boston. I also treated her with Hartz Ultra Guard and have not had any adverse reactions as of yet (hopefully not ever) After reading the posts I realized Uggy was having a BAD reaction to the Sergeants. I bathed him right away and gave him a small dose of benadryl. He usually hates bath time but when I put him in the warm water he seemed so grateful. I will never use this product again and I'm thankful my Boston did not have an adverse reaction. The lesson I learned is don't cheap out!! Spend a little more now and avoid the heartache and headache

I too had a horrible experience when I used this product. I usually take my dogs (both pruebred Shih Tzu's) the the vet for their Advantix flea control. However, last Tuesday night (6/23) we discovered that our dogs had fleas and the vet was already closed. I went to the store to purchase flea shampoo, but there wasn't any instock so I bought the Sergeants Flea control for the small (9-20 lbs) dogs. I bathed my dogs in sensative puppy shampoo (so there wasn't any flea control additives) and applied the Seargents as directed. My smaller dog (9lbs) only received 1/2 of the ampule. Aproximately 45 minutes after administration, the smaller dog started "ticking" and became very restless, vomitted foamy stuff and eventually all the contents in her stomach. I took her to an after hours Vet hospital where I waited as they bathed her, gave her a shot and iv fluids. At 12:30 AM I was told she was still foaming and needed the IV flush overnight as she was still ticking and lethargic. I was told by the Vet that she had a toxic reaction to the flea medication and they see it all the time w/ Sergeants and Hartz. I had to pay the bill before I left which was $584.00 - not an exageration, I have the bill to prove it. On my way home, my husband calls and states that our other dog is acting the same way, she's 11.2 pounds so it may have taken longer to hit her system. When I saw Maggie, she was much better and wasn't ticking, we thought she was missing Ruby. As a precaution, I gave her a bath but an hour later, she began exhibiting the same type of nervous tick/spasms and would try and bite whoever was holding her. She too was restless but very exhausted. She would try to sleep but would awake every few minutes w/ the tick/spasm. I washed her again and timed the twitches/spasms. At first they were every 2 - 3 minutes and over time the duration between twiches would be a little longer until around 3:30 AM when they seemed to subside. Thankfully, they are fine but they spent the next 24 hours very lethargic and depressed like. I caution everyone... DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! My vet said she's seen so many dogs die from it and have these similar reactions. WHY is the product still on the market?

Same product. same results, When is someone going to SUE Sergeants?
If you are reading this I have heard that if you submit the vet bills and the product receipts they will reimburse. Maybe.
Eventually. If your pet dies they will probably offer to buy a new one.

As if that could "fix" your loss!

I hope the people who made this product suffer the pains and suffering of our pet maybe one day from their use of a "safe for people" product. Maybe the CEO's ought to be forced to test the products on their own pets. No amount of money can cover the pain of listening to your little pet suffer all night long. Neither my wife nor I were able to sleep a wink through the whining and moaning.

IF YOU LOVE YOUR PETS
PLEASE!
DO NOT buy any products from these people!

(July 16 2009)I am in the middle of worrying whether my dogs, a boxer and a Puggle will be alright. I gave sergeant's Silver to both of them ( I usually use Frontline, but in this economy, I was trying to save $$.) 24 hourse later, Duke, our Puggle started whining, chewing his feet, became hyper and couldn't settle down. I was trying to sleep, but finally at 11:30 PM last night I gave him a bath, not even thinking that it could be an allergice reaction. He seems really releived when I put in in the tub and bathed him, with Pantene Shampoo. So this morning, I came to work and googled "flea control dogs, sergeants' and all these complaints came up. I was horrified, because Lilly, our boxer, had not shown symptioms, but some of the reactions were delayed as I read above. I left work and went home and bathed them both in the Dawn dishwasheing soap. ( Duke got a second bath since I had used shampoo the first time) . I will be monitoring both of them very closely. Duke seems ok, and he did sleep next to me all night after his first bath, but is still wiggy with his feet and ears. Lilly still seems fine. Right now, I don't know if its all in my head, but my skin feels hot in my arms and my nose and I wonder if some of the stuff entered my skin while washing it off! I will never use ANY kind of flea treatment between the shoulders again!!! Only flea dips for Lilly and Duke from now on! They are family, just as all you readers condsider your pets.

Just this week I noticed that our dog had quite a few fleas after visiting the groomer. We are a one income family and can not afford Front Line. We had tried Hartz, but it just didn't work. I was at Kroger's this weekend and saw they had Sergeant's Gold for dogs that weigh 9 to 20 pounds, which is suppose to be their new improved formula with skin protection technology. I applied it to her and of course she went running around the house rolling around like she does after getting a bath. Last night, I noticed that she was panting a lot and running around the house and simply acting weird. However, I didn't give it much thought. Today, I couldn't even get her to go out to go to the bathroom. She laid around in our coat closet on my children's shoes. It didn't dawn on me that it could be an allergic reaction to the Sergeant's, but I decided to give her a bath with Palmolive dish soap. She was shaking up a storm, but Muffin appeared releived after I started working the dish soap in to clean her. She has finally come out of the closet, but she still isn't herself. Muffin acts like there are thousands of fleas attacking her at times. I am going to give her a bath in Dawn tomorrow and do that for a couple of days until she is back to normal. Unfortunatley, we don't have the money to take her to the vet so we are hoping this will help since appears to have made a small difference already. I wish I would have researched this before buying Sergeant's. Looks like I am going to have to find a natural alternative to the flea problem, because we can not afford the Front Line. I am just glad that nothing too serious happened to Muffin. I am planning on calling the company and returning it for a refund.

Sergeant knows that they are causing suffering. They are making a profit from hurting innocent pets and creating financial hardships (emergency vet bills) for Good People during a bad time in our economy.
Stop asking us to look at the label and start reading all the countless cases of sufferings caused by your company.

Ahhhh...the same thing happened last night. I have 2 Corgis and we applied Sergeants Gold flea control for 9-20 within 1/2 hour of application they both started having reactions, the twitching, pacing, heavy panting, obvious discomfort. We then decided to bath them using dog shampoo. That seemed to give some temporary relief but soon they were exhibiting the same problems as before the bath. We then took them to the beach and thought a good salt water swim would help and again, it did temporarily. They were both up all night, crying, panting, etc...when we called the Sergeants help line they recommended to bathe them using dish soap and all symptoms should end within 24 hours oh and not to use their product again (NO SH*T)! What a horrible and frightening experience this has been...at the very least I'm going to ask every store in my community that sells these awful products to pull them from the shelves.

OMG I was checking on sergants gold for my under 5lb kitty. We gave her the flea drop and figured for 10$ at walmart hopefully it will work. So far the fleas are still there and its been about a week or 2 since I gave it to her. I didnt respond much to her changes thinking maybe she was just over loving or whiny, but now I am freaking out, I noticed she has been scratching her neck a lot, she has a lot of scratchs on her face. She lays on me a lot more and even crys at me during the night when I am on the computer. I figured she was over needy, I have no idea if this is a reaction and dont have any money to take her to the vet to be sure. (I am disabled and on SSI so money is tight) I am scared for my kitty after reading all this information. How can they market such a dangerous product. I gonna try bathing her (wish me luck she is fiesty with water) and see if I cant get that horrible medication off her... ; ;

I am so upset that this product is still on the shelves. What does it take to get this product off of the shelves. How many more dogs have to suffer agonizing pain and discomfort before anything will be done. Our dog suffered severe discomfort and pain when we applied Sergeants Silver for fleas on her. She was up all night crying and moaning in agonizing pain. She was restless and pacing all night until we finally realized that it was the Sergeants Flea product that caused this to happen. I was horrified to read all the reviews by people telling the same story about their pets. Why is this company still in business? If it were a human being that had to suffer like this, it would have been pulled off the shelves immediately and the company would have to answer to all these complaints. Why not for dogs? They can also feel pain and discomfort.

I took my miniature schnauzer to the Vet on Saturday, 9/12/09, for what appeared to be a rash of some sort that was on his shoulders and oozing and had continued to spread. The vet gave him a steroid shot, prednisone, and pain meds. At the time, I didn't put two-and-two together to realize that it was the Sergeant SentryPro XFC flea drops that I had properly administered to his spine. I did not spread it on his sides. Well, needless to say that my dog was miserable: withdrawn, in pain, did not want to be touched. The vet shaved him and we discovered he had been chemically burned! I have the photos to prove it and it is horrible. He is in so much pain! I had no idea and I am so upset. The vet called Sergeants who, of course, tried to do damage control by saying that it was a reaction and that the vet was doing the right thing. We bathed the dog 3x in Dawn dishwashing liquid to get the poison off his skin. He must remain on pain meds and antibiotics until he is no longer suffering and the infection stops. It is now 9/14/09 and I have the guilt of knowing I put such a horrible product on my pet. Sergeants should be banned from the marketplace! What I want to know is how can the employees at Sergeants go to sleep at night with a clear conscience knowing that they create a product that kills and severely injures our pets!?!

By the way, I had tasted something metallic in my mouth and had the feeling of "spiders" on my skin. I had poisoned myself too!

Everyone who complains here needs to write to the EPA, FDA, and file a complaint with Sergeants. If we all complain, perhaps we can get their product removed from the shelves and stop pet suffering!!!

IF YOU USE THIS PRODUCT, YOU MUST WASH YOUR PET IN DAWN DISHWASHING LIQUID IMMEDIATELY TO REMOVE THE CHEMICALS. Per the vet, Dawn is the only liquid safe and effective to completely strip the chemicals from the pet!!!

Well, I hate to say it, but everyone should realize that ALL flea products are dangerous. They are insecticide for goodness sake! If you use a flea shampoo you NEVER use the drops too!!! Rub bug spray all over your body and see if you don't get sick! Use only the minimum necessary, ALWAYS read the label and remember every time you use all that stuff you are rubbing insecticide all over your pet and they can't just go take a shower. There is no reason to use that crap all year long in any place that snows. Why don't the companies provide a tiny drop in a small "test applicator" that you could test on the pet first? And why do they have such huge doses for pets of highly variable weight? Something needs to be done to work on natural ways of eliminating fleas.

Ok.. So Bella ( my little Shih Tzu).. Yesterday I applied this Sergeants Flea Drops on her, ( we are going camping and I thought I could prevent fleas). Later, last night she was crazy restless. tremors, looked wild eyed. and could not relax. I washed her, thinking her skin may be irritated with the flea stuff. but she continued to get worse. Finally going to the Animal Emergency Room., She is now on IV, s had to have muscle relaxants, Valium and a charcoal treatment. I cannot believe that there is no warnings on the label. It is a vague statement that says if your dog has adverse symptoms contact your vet... No where does it list what kind of things may occur.
The Vet knew exactly what was going on. She says she see this often. No how bad is that. Why is there no guideline and regulations with these products. I am very upset. The public should be informed of this. We have s warning on OUR medicines etc. Why not on products for animals..

Same crap! Sargeants Flea medicine...came 3 blue tubes in the box. We put the stuff on all 3 dogs and went to bed. The next morning, our cat, who loves to groom the dogs, was convulsing and foaming at the mouth! The vet bill was $407! Then, just when we thought we were at least through this mess...that evening, one of the dogs, a Yorkipoo, began twitching and scratching and moaning. We bathed her in soothing dog shampoo which didn't help at all. We then went to Petco and got some anti-itch spray for dogs. That didn't help either! We then took the dog to the Emergency (high dollar) vet where they treated her with a smile and asked for $386. All in all, we're into this now for almost $800! All because we wanted our little friends to be free of pesky fleas!! Sargeants needs to be out of business! I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I am not sure what agency controls these greedy idiots!

I am very upset! I used this product on my dog! She's a mess, itching, shaking and oozing on her back where it was put! I am on my way to the vet! I am so sorry I bought this and used it on my dog! I've emailed the Company and the store where I bought it! I will do whatever it takes to make it known how terrible this product is! Not sure if I can forgive myself for this! Nor can I forgive the makers of such a terrible product!
