Subject: An emerging victory that you helped create
Dear MoveOn member,
Big news: As of this afternoon, a deal has finally emerged that would end the government shutdown and stop the U.S. from hitting the debt ceiling. This is a victory that MoveOn members helped create.
But it's a victory that comes at an enormous cost to America. Tea Party Republicans came within just 24 hours of defaulting on our national debt for the first time in U.S. history. They made our government look dysfunctional to the rest of the world, and brought us to the verge of wreaking havoc on the global economy.
Over the past two weeks, MoveOn members have worked tirelessly to get our government working again. There's certainly still more to do—the emerging deal makes it clear that we'll have to go on offense soon to protect Social Security and Medicare—but if you've ever questioned whether you have the power to make change, check out how MoveOn members like you took action and kept up the pressure on lawmakers:
1. The campaign started when more than 1,000 MoveOn members dropped by congressional offices the very day the government shut down, leaving bags of tea and signs that read, "We've had enough tea, thanks."
2. The next day we began encouraging millions of MoveOn members to enroll in the new health care exchanges available through Obamacare—the prime target of the GOP shutdown. Was this ever going to end the shutdown? No. But was it a slap in the face to Republicans intent on seeing the Affordable Care Act fail? Absolutely.
3. Around the same time, we began quantifying the real cost of the shutdown with this live counter at www.costoftheshutdown.com. To date, tens of thousands of people have shared our counter with their friends online—spreading awareness that the GOP's stubbornness has cost the American people more than $4.5 billion.
4. Days later, after partnering with Public Policy Polling, we really changed the conversation by releasing a new poll—funded with small dollar donations from MoveOn members—showing that Republicans have made themselves vulnerable in the 2014 elections thanks to the shutdown. Democrats need 17 seats to take back the House—and our results have shown Republicans trailing in at least 25 districts. Here's how MSNBC mapped out the results:
5. And none of this would have been possible if MoveOn members hadn't launched more petitions and local campaigns than any time in the past six months—with a broad range of smart, strategic goals. More than 600,000 members signed petitions asking lawmakers to forgo their salaries until the shutdown ends. Others pressured their representatives to support smart legislative moves that could end the shutdown. And hundreds started petitions that included stories about how they've been personally affected by the shutdown—and asked that the GOP simply stop the madness. Many of these petitions were delivered at rallies around the country yesterday.
That's just a glimpse of what MoveOn members have done together over the last two weeks, but it speaks volumes about the impact progressives have had during the GOP shutdown.
Making sure that Tea Party Republicans are held to blame for the shutdown by the public and the mainstream media—and that Democrats in Congress don't buckle under the pressure for a bad deal—has not been easy. But MoveOn members have accepted the challenge.
And as a deal finally comes into place, one thing that's been made crystal-clear because of Tea Party Republican antics is that the GOP's House majority is at risk next year, and we have the next 13 months to capitalize on their recklessness.
Can you start the push for accountability at the polls by sharing our vulnerability map today?
Thanks for all you do.

QUOTE FROM JAYNE COUNTY. I am a firm believer in the JEWS having a homeland. But the 'state' of Israel is wearing my patience thin! Theres something called 'respect for human dignity' and the poiltical powers that be are sinking to the same level of the very people that at one time persecuted the Jews. The Ammorites, Babylonians, Philistines, Persians, Chaldians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Romans, Germans, the list goes on. Most of these cultures have passed on into history. And now the most persecuted and abused of all peoples, The Jews, are now persecuting, an entire group of people! And all in GOD'S name! Whose God? Which God? Where is this so called God? No nation or culture in all of history has ever been able to produce this cruel, murdering, racist God! So we have to take their word for it? What word? The word of a bunch of land stealing, ignorant, superstitious, mean, greedy, arrogant, invading, PSYCHOS?? Caesar!!! Alexander! Hitler! Musolini! Constantine, King Of Babylon! Prince of Assyria! Darius! Pharoah, George Bush, the list goes on and on! All LIARS! Using their violent, false, completely made up religions as an excuse for some of the most horrific, mass murdering extravaganzas ever to be witnessed by man or beast ! THE BLOODY REIGN OF MAN! And as far as I am concerned, none of them are no better than the other. All the same!!! Humans pesecuting and mistreating each other! And why? Because, they think that their GOD is the right ONE! And this gives them some HOLY right to use, abuse, and KILL all others that are not like them! GOD TOLD ME TO KILL YOU!!! Spoken like a true mentally deranged religious NUTJOB! TEA PARTY IS BRINGING ABOUT ANOTHER AMERIKAN CIVIL WAR!!! Jayne County says to get in their bigoted faces and tell them to FUCK OFF!!! We ain't taking their SHIT!!!
When Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, many pundits and political observers were eager to expunge the nation’s brutal and long-running history of stark racial oppression. They spoke of a “post-racial” society freed from the divisions of tribe, healed of the deep wounds that ached and bled along the color line for centuries.
Even those who were less sanguine about the disappearance of racism — myself included — believed that the election of the nation’s first black president signaled a new era of greater racial harmony and understanding. Surely, a nation ready to be led by a black man was ready to let go many of its oldest and ugliest prejudices.
But that was a very naive notion. It turns out that Obama’s election has, instead, provoked a new civil war, a last battle cry of secession by a group of voters who want no part of a country led by a black man, no place in a world they don’t rule, no home in a society where they are simply one more minority group. Call those folks “Tea Partiers.”
The ultraconservatives who have taken over the Republican Party are motivated by many things — antipathy toward the federal government, conservative religious beliefs and a traditional Republican suspicion of taxes, among them. But the most powerful force animating their fight is a deep-seated racial antagonism.
Don’t take my word for it. Democracy Corps, a political research and polling group headed by Stanley Greenberg and James Carville, has published a report from a series of focus groups conducted with segments of the Republican Party — moderates, evangelicals and Tea Partiers.
The report confirms that Republicans, especially the Tea Partiers, “are very conscious of being white in a country that is increasingly minority. The race issue is very much alive.” It also notes that “Barack Obama and Obamacare is a racial flashpoint for many evangelical and Tea Party voters.”
Tea Partiers believe that the Democratic Party is intent on expanding the social safety net in order, basically, to buy votes. They see “Obamacare” as a sop to that alleged 47 percent of lazy Americans who don’t want to work, don’t pay any taxes and live off government handouts. And, of course, those lazy Americans are, in their view, voters of color.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, STANDING UP TO THE CONFEDERACY! BARAK OBAMA, STANDING UP TO THE TEAPUBLIKKKAN BULLIES!
The Power of Standing Up to Bullies
By Andrew Schmookler (about the author)
October 12, 2013 at 09:29:46
As I write this, there is a shred of uncertainty about whether President Obama will continue until the end standing firm on his position that there will be no concessions made to hostage-takers. I hope he gives not an inch on that.
Regardless, the unfolding of this crisis proves quite clearly that the best way to disempower the dark spirit that drives these right-wing bullies is to take the right stand and then stand one's ground.
Here once again we see a recapitulation of the drama leading up to the Civil War.
It would be very easy to document, extensively, the proposition that the South of the 1850s, in its conduct toward the North, and the Republican Party of the past fifteen years, in its conduct toward the Democrats, have been bullies.
Arguably, the Northerners of the years before the Civil War were less cowed by the Southern bullies than the Democrats of our times have been by the Republicans. But the Southerners believed that, though the North might complain about the South's breaking up of the Union, when push came to shove they would back down. The Yankee might get upset and sue you, one Southerner said, but he won't fight.
What they hadn't counted on was the extraordinary quality of character of Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln was an unusually humane and conciliatory person. That came through in all his communications to the South prior to the outbreak of the war. But he was also resolute.
On certain essential points, he was not going to yield: 1) he would not bother slavery where it was already established, he said repeatedly, but he was resolved to oppose its expansion into new territory; 2) while he implored the Southerners to give him a chance to prove that he would respect their rights, he maintained that those rights did not include the right to unilaterally break up the Union he was obliged by oath to preserve.
Lincoln held out olive branches, and he did not attack. But neither did he retreat from the ground he clearly staked out. He did not yield Fort Sumter, in the harbor of Charleston, in the first state to secede, and he did not allow the men stationed there to be starved out. But he did not try to fortify it for a fight, and it was not he but Jefferson Davis who gave the order that commenced the violence that would last for four years.
And that would destroy the Slave Power the Southern bullies had set out to advance.
By staking out morally defensible ground, and then standing up to the bullies, President Lincoln made himself into the rock on which the bullies --becoming reckless, over-reaching-- would founder.
Now, in America, another president has (so far) finally --after caving time and again-- stood his ground. The Republicans, it seems, gave no credence to President Obama's repeated statements that he would pay any ransom demanded by bullying extortionists.
So the bullies kept on coming, counting on the president's being intimidated. But President Obama --having staked out an appropriate position in defense of the American constitutional order--stood firm against the attack.
And once again, the bullies are destroying themselves. ("We could be witnessing the death throes of the Republican Party," writes John B. Judis yesterday in The New Republic.)
It's highly unlikely that this one battle will end the war, but it shows how those who would preserve the democratic constitutional system that is our heritage, should fight it. When the bullies come at you demanding you yield ground that should not be given them, stand firm.
Let their ship break apart on the reef of your steadfast resolve.

PEOPLE WE ARE UNDER THREAT BY CHRISTIAN FASCISTS!! WE ARE THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC! PEOPLE PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUS!!!
Our job is to reclaim America for Christ, whatever the cost. As the vice regents of God, we are to exercise godly dominion " over our neighborhoods, our schools, our governments, our literature and arts, our sports arenas, our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors -- in short, over every aspect and institution of human society.
-- D. James Kennedy, Coral Ridge Ministries Pastor, at a "Reclaiming America for Christ" conference in February 2005
We will not try to reform the existing institutions. We only intend to weaken them, and eventually destroy them.
-- A Manifesto from Paul Weyrich's Free Congress Foundation
The current government shutdown is a foretaste of the radical right's deadly serious agenda to take sole power, irrespective of their increasing unpopularity and irrespective of the supposedly sacrosanct rules, principles, laws, and customary ways of doing things in this country. Their targets for overthrow include the Constitution's separation of church and state as well as all of the institutions and arenas of society. This is their attitude, about which they are entirely sincere: "We want it all and we are not going to stop until we get it, because God's on our side and anyone who stands in the way will be beaten to a pulp because we are the lambs of Jesus."
THE COMING DARKNESS. THE SECOND AMERIKAN CIVIL WAR.
by Bob Avakian, Chairman, Revolutionary Communist Party, USA
Revolution #009, July 24, 2005, posted at revcom.us
EDITORS’ NOTE: The following is part of a series of excerpts on various subjects—drawn from conversations and discussions, as well as more formal talks, by Bob Avakian—which we will be running in this newspaper over the next period of time. This has been edited for publication and footnotes have been added.
These reactionary religious fundamentalists in the U.S., whom we have very correctly identified as Christian Fascists, are actually calling for things to be done in society, and by the government, that many people still believe would not or could not really be done in a country like the U.S. “They could never really be serious about doing that,” many people will say, speaking of things like literally applying what the Bible says about homosexuals—that homosexuals must be put to death. Well, people had better realize how serious these Christian Fascists are, what they actually intend to do, and how serious the situation is. Among these Christian Fascists, including ones who are very influential and powerful, and powerfully connected, there is very definitely an intention of imposing “biblically based morality,” including things like the execution of homosexuals, as “the law of the land.”
Or take another dimension of this: the institution of marriage. In the dispute around gay marriage, some of the people defending the right to gay marriage have tried to answer the argument that gay marriage will undermine the institution of marriage by saying: “If you are really worried about the future of marriage, why don’t you do something about divorce?” Well, as the saying goes, “be careful what you wish for!” I doubt very seriously if those who make this argument by way of defending the right to gay marriage—or at least the great majority of them—actually want to see a situation where divorce is outlawed. But, once again, people better realize how serious this is—and that there are powerful forces who are very serious indeed about outlawing divorce. The fact is that, in Louisiana and some other states, there is already a law providing for “covenant marriages.” There are two kinds of marriages in those states now: in addition to “regular” marriage, there is “covenant marriage,” which, as its religious overtones imply, is based on provisions taken from the Bible. These “covenant marriages” eliminate “no fault divorce,” they make it much more difficult for those who have entered into these marriages to get a divorce. At this point these “covenant marriages” are entered into voluntarily, and there is still the alternative of “regular” marriages— at this point! But these (for now voluntary) “covenant marriages” are part of a very definite and determined drive by Christian Fascist forces to get rid of divorce altogether—to outlaw it outright—and, in a male supremacist society like this, everybody knows, or should know, what that would mean. It would mean that millions and millions of women will be trapped in oppressive—and even physically and sexually abusive—marriages.
Claudia Koonz pointed out in her book The Nazi Conscience that, among the Nazis in Germany, there was a kind of “division of labor”: at times at least, Hitler would sound a more reasonable, and even at times conciliatory, tone—while his followers would be agitating and taking action around the most openly vicious and brutal measures, directed against Jewish people, communists, homosexuals, and others whom the Nazis regarded as an abomination and a blot upon German society. And all this laid the basis for the mass round-ups and executions, and the literal genocide, that followed under the rule of the Nazis. Similarly, the 21st-century American equivalent of Nazis, the Christian Fascists and others generally in the same camp, have their hitmen (and women), including those like David Horowitz, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter, who are openly foaming at the mouth with attacks on those they see as standing in the way of their program. And, besides attacking people who are genuinely opposed not only to this fascism but to the capitalist-imperialist system as a whole, one of the main lines of their assault is (to use a very relevant analogy) viciously going after the Weimar Republic (the bourgeois-democratic republic in Germany after World War 1, which was replaced and forcibly abolished when Hitler and the Nazis came to power in the 1930s). We have to understand the meaning and significance of this, and the purpose behind it.
Going after the equivalent of the Weimar Republic in the U.S. today, the Democratic Party and the “Liberals,” and so on—attacking them as nothing less than traitors—is part of an overall program aimed at silencing and outright suppressing, including through the force of the state, any group or section of society, even within the ruling class, that would pose an obstacle to the implementation of the program that the Christian Fascists, and forces in the same general camp with them, are very seriously seeking to impose on the U.S. (and indeed throughout the world). There is, and for some time there has been, a very definite, conscious and concerted effort by the forces in that general fascist camp to systematically attack not just communists, or anarchists and other radicals, but liberals, mainstream ruling class liberal politicians—attacking them as having been nothing less than traitors, from the time of the cold war to the “war on terror.”
David Horowitz’s latest book is called Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left.In looking it over it is clear that it is yet another diatribe that insists that the “liberals” and the left in the U.S. are at least objectively in the same camp with the Islamic fundamentalists and on the wrong side of the “war on terror.” This should be taken very seriously, including because Horowitz has ties with prominent and powerful Republican Party politicians and functionaries, right up to the White House. If you listen to Rush Limbaugh, at this point his main line of attack is not against radicals and communists, such as our party—his attacks are not so much directed against actual leftists all that much—but are much more directed against the mainstream ruling class liberals, because again one of the ways that fascism triumphs is by tearing down “the Weimar Republic”—going after bourgeois-democratic forces in the ruling class—attacking their decadence, their weakness, their inability to defend the national entity, etc. And this is a phenomenon that’s been developing over some time in the U.S., and is now very acute. Ann Coulter recently wrote a book with the explicit title: Treason. These people are out there creating public opinion around this, while Bush still maintains, much of the time, a posture of “inclusiveness” and willingness to work with other ruling class forces, at least on certain terms. Bush didn’t say, during his debates with Kerry, for example: “You are a traitor, and ought to be put to death.” But there are many people, aligned with and supporting Bush now, who are very definitely, and repeatedly, saying these kinds of things. When that is not repudiated by Bush and others in power, what does it mean? What are the implications of this?
The answer is not to seek to defend and maintain the “Weimar Republic” (bourgeois democracy—the “democratic form” of capitalist dictatorship 1) as such. That does not offer a real solution, and certainly not one in the interests of the masses of people and the great majority of humanity. But we should recognize and not be blind to what it means when these fascists put the “Weimar Republic”—by analogy, the liberals in the ruling class—in the camp of enemy, and go so far as to label them traitors, and go after them in that way. What is that preparing the ground for, what are the implications of that? The point, and our objective, once again, is not to defend the Weimar Republic—tailing and upholding the “liberal” section of the imperialist ruling class—but to fully recognize, and oppose in a radically different way and toward radically different ends, the seriousness of these attacks and what this all represents. In previous talks and writings I have spoken to this phenomenon of the unraveling of what for some time has been the “cohering center” of the society and the rule of the bourgeoisie in the U.S.—and how we are already seeing manifestations of that. 2 I have emphasized that all of this will not, by any means, be positive in the short run, and left to itself—and it is not the role of communists, it is not meeting our responsibilities, to simply stand by and celebrate all the unraveling of the existing cohering center and form of capitalist rule and think it is going to mean that something positive is bound to emerge from this and in fact is just going to “fall into our lap.” We have to take up the tremendous challenge of repolarization — repolarization for revolution.
The “Weimar Republic” does need to be replaced, and superseded. The bourgeois republic—the rule of capitalism and imperialism, in its bourgeois-democratic form—is in fact a repressive system of rule, rooted in a whole network and process of exploitation and oppression, which brings untold, and unnecessary, suffering to millions, and literally billions, of people, throughout the world, including within the republic itself. It needs to be replaced and superseded, however, not by an even more grotesque and more openly murderous form of the same system, but by a radically new society, and a radically different kind of state, that will open the way and lead finally to the abolition of all forms of oppressive and repressive rule and all relations of domination and exploitation, throughout the world.
NOTES:
1. In a number of places, including in the book Democracy: Can’t We Do Better Than That? and a recent talk, “Dictatorship and Democracy, and the Socialist Transition to Communism,” Bob Avakian explains and examines how societies like the U.S., even where they may not be ruled through open, undisguised repression and terror, and even with all their talk of “democracy for all,” are in fact bourgeois dictatorships—rule over society by the capitalist class, or bourgeoisie, based fundamentally on a monopoly of armed force (and in particular “legitimate” armed force) by that capitalist class and its “right” and ability to use that armed power, including the police and armed forces as well as the courts and bureaucracies, to put down, as brutally as it sees fit, any opposition or resistance that poses a serious challenge to its rule.

Subject: Our plan to end the shutdown--and make the GOP regret it
The shutdown is backfiring on Republicans big time—and if we can keep up the pressure this could lead to the end of the tea party. Can you donate $3 to help hold Republicans accountable and end this outrageous shutdown?
Chip in $3 Dear MoveOn member,
The government shutdown is terrible for America—but it's turning into a flat-out catastrophe for tea party Republicans.
Polls show the public knows exactly who's to blame in Washington, and the disapproval ratings for the tea party have reached an all-time high.1
This government shutdown really could spell the end of the tea party. But it's up to us to make sure Republicans pay such a steep political price that they never try this kind of hostage-taking again.
MoveOn members have already been organizing protests at Republican offices around the country, and we've launched our biggest advertising campaign since the 2012 election. But this could go on for days or even weeks, so to see this fight all the way through, we're aiming to raise $200,000. Can you chip in $3?
Yes, I can contribute $3 to help hold Republicans accountable and end the shutdown.
Since the government shut down on Monday night, MoveOn members have been making phone calls, organizing petitions, and showing up at the offices of Republican members of Congress. Today, we bought 100% of the ad space on the homepage of The Washington Post to make sure that members of Congress can't miss us.
The strategy is to make sure voters know who's to blame for this mess. And it's working.
But if this goes on for another couple weeks—which a lot of people are predicting—then we're going to need to keep pushing. Here's what we have planned next:
- TV ads demanding that Speaker John Boehner stop blocking legislation passed by the Senate—and supported by a majority of the House of Representatives.
- Continued online ads aimed at swing voters in the closest districts.
- Rallies and "thank you" events to make sure Democrats continue to stand strong against Republican hostage-taking.
But we need to keep the pressure on for as long as it takes—and that could be days, or even weeks. And since MoveOn is 100% funded by you, our members, we're counting on you to make sure we have the resources to win.
Can you contribute $3 to help hold Republicans accountable and end this outrageous shutdown?
Thanks for all you do.
